Poetry_contest_graphic_032707

WASHINGTON, DC (March 22nd, 2007)-- Migraine disease and headaches can be debilitating, causing sufferers to feel increasingly isolated. Migraine disease affects nearly 36 million people in the United Statesalone, and at least 80% of the world's population will be affected by tension-type headaches at some time in their lives.

Author and patient advocate Teri Robert has been experiencing headaches and Migraine attacks from childhood and encourages sufferers to find creative ways to express their pain and emotions. "Writing can be very therapeutic, as can reading what others have written," said Robert. "Migraine disease and headaches can impact our lives more than many people could ever imagine." To provide sufferers and those affected by the suffering of people close to them with a creative outlet, she has launched "Putting Our Heads Together" Poetry Contest 2007. All qualified entries will be published to MyMigraineConnection.com and HelpForHeadaches.com on April 30, in recognition of National Poetry Month. "It's my hope that these writings will also aid non-sufferers in understanding the impact of headaches and Migraine disease," said Robert, who currently educates and supports patients as Lead Expert for the MyMigraineConnection.com community.

MAGNUM Calls for a Neurology-Dental Liaison for Treatment of Migraine

Press Release

MAGNUM Calls for a Neurology-Dental Liaison in the Treatment of Migraine Disease Related Dental Damage

WASHINGTON, DC-July 25, 2006  As far back as 1986, studies have exposed that 40% of outpatients with bulimia are found to have evidence of significant enamel erosion, and chronicity of vomiting was significantly associated with this erosion. A liaison between the Migraine community and the dental community is needed to address the serious dental damage caused by years of vomiting induced by Migraine disease.

The lack of an aggressive relationship between the dental community and the neurology community concerns MAGNUM.  There is currently some exchange of ideas between the dental community and the neurology community, but this dialog is more prevalent among the neuralgic community. Considering that dental issues such as grinding, clenching, and TMJ have long been known to trigger Migraine, a more active relationship between the dental and neurology community is important.

Having said that, MAGNUM is grateful for the active efforts by some dentists to issue studies and collateral at medical conferences such as the American Headache Society Congresses and National Headache Foundation conventions regarding the treatment of dental conditions related to Migraine and headache. But this is not a policy reflected by the American Dental Association (ADA), which has only one search return for Migraine -- and it was not related to health care, but a legal notation.

According to Dr. John Halmaghi, a leading dentist and expert on Migraine and dental related problems, "You will find that Migraine patients have an abnormal chewing cycle that is coupled with a severe clench or grind habit...they think that biting their teeth together is normal. For rabbits and mice, biting teeth together is normal. For humans, we should never touch our teeth together, not even when we chew food." Dr. Halmaghi goes on to state, "Remember, our jaw muscles work over 5,000 times a day. In a clencher, this number goes up to 10,000+. The NTI works on the premise that the patient will learn to stop biting their teeth together. Unfortunately, it does nothing to address a joint problem which is all too common for the Migraine patient."

Elvis Presley's Private Struggle With Intractable Migraines Revealed

Washington, DC (April 19, 1999) - In the heartland of the country, Migraine sufferer Jennifer Johnson is rushed to a Wisconsin emergency room. Jennifer, who suffers from just a few Migraines a year, was not responding to her home OTC (over-the-counter) treatment regimen and so came to the ER to put an end to the severe pain and nausea caused from her three-day-long debilitating Migraine attack. But to her shock and dismay, this Midwest emergency room would only add to her suffering. The ER refused to give her treatment, and, in frustration and disabling pain, she went to the only other hospital in the small city. Jennifer, like so many other Migraineurs, could pass a drug test with flying colors, does not drink alcohol, and hates smoking. But based upon her 'look' and a health care professional's misinterpretation of the existence of 'migraine behavior,' Jennifer was assumed to be a 'drug seeker' and was turned away. This scenario, unfortunately, is nothing new, as Americans have been misunderstanding the behavior of Migraine sufferers for decades. Some well-known Americans have had to endure this misunderstanding, oftentimes negatively affecting their legacy. The most recent findings reveal the fact that the king of rock and roll, Elvis Presley, suffered from Migraines and that his condition has been greatly misunderstood. Continue reading...

MAGNUM Tries to Curb Managed Care's Efforts to Withhold Treatment of Those in Pain

Washington, DC (February 4, 1999) - Terrell Davis remembered to take his anti-Migraine medicine (of his choice) as he promised before the big Superbowl game, and this gifted athlete delighted us with his performance, this time, unencumbered by a disabling Migraine attack. The MVP and Migraineur doesn't have to worry about how much Migranal® he uses in a month because the Denver Bronco's team doctor wouldn't allow his health care provider to use a formula to limit this star runningback's treatment. Nor should a working mother in New York have her physician's treatment limited just because her Migraine medication of choice is relatively costly. MAGNUM has identified problems often faced by Migraine sufferers who find themselves faced with limits placed on their physician-approved abortive Migraine medication. Such limitation is a significant national problem as more than 26 million individuals, most of them women, suffer from serious Migraine disease. Continue reading...

The FDA's well-regarded publication presents the article, "Heading off Migraine Pain," to instruct Migraine sufferers on ways to beat the pain by avoiding triggers, heeding early warning symptoms and, with the help of a health care professional, find effective drug treatment. "A Migraine is a hell of an enemy," Coleman says in the article, "and you don't know when the next one's going to come." Continue reading...

MAGNUM and Others Succeed In Keeping Severe Pain As an "Emergency Medical Condition"

WASHINGTON, D.C. (August 6, 1997) -- M.A.G.N.U.M. Inc.(Migraine Awareness Group; a National Understanding for Migraineurs), along with many others in the medical community, succeeded in working with House and Senate offices to convince them to retain the language in the Balanced Budget Act of 1997 which included "severe pain" in the prudent layperson definition of an "emergency medical condition" for Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries enrolled in managed care plans. Deletion of such language would have resulted in denial of emergency room visit reimbursement for certain people who sought emergency room treatment for severe pain, discouraging them from seeking such treatment in the future. As pain is a symptom of many serious and life-threatening conditions, deletion of such language would have threatened the life and health of many Americans. Continue reading...
